Studio Set Series: The Piano ~ Boudoir Photography ~ Vancouver, WA

What’s the first thing you notice when you look at these boudoir shots?

At first, you’ll probably see that they include a piano! It’s a huge piece that’s also a new addition to the studio, so it’s sure to catch your eye. Plus, when looking at my studio sets... you would typically see a bed, couch, or even my window seat. You aren’t used to seeing a piano in my boudoir photography, so it’s guaranteed to stand out!

When I look at these photos myself, though... I see something entirely different!

This new set in my studio is FILLED with sentimental items from my family, so my eye goes to those items first. Once I spot those items... I’m immediately reminded of special memories that are tied to those items and the people that I love. So even though we’re seeing the same photos, I’m also seeing years of memories when I look at these shots!

Today’s post is ALL about my piano set, but I know I can’t talk about this set without sharing some of my own life with you... so that’s what I’ll be doing today!

First, I definitely have to tell you about this piano! It’s my late grandmother’s piano, and my family surprised me by bringing it to me when I bought my first house. It has been with me ever since! Even though I don’t play piano much at all anymore (I used to play a TON as a kid), I absolutely love having this piano in my house. Plus, I’m excited that I can use it to do something else that I love... photography!

I also want to share more about the artwork above the piano! My great grandmother painted it many years ago, and it features a stormy ocean. When setting up the new piano set in my studio, I realized that this painting would be completely perfect for the space. I also felt that it was SO meaningful to feature an item that belonged to my grandmother next to a separate item from my great grandmother.

How amazing is this? The piano set is filled with creative energy from the incredible women in my family... and this piano set will be used by even more incredible women during our boudoir sessions!

I had this thought in mind when we got started with our first boudoir session that included the piano set, so I truly couldn’t wait to photograph these special items!

During the session, my model was incredible and helped me capture all kinds of poses in different parts of the room. We took some photos as she laid on the piano bench, and these turned out to be incredible! She also switched out of her outfit and draped herself in a white sheet, and this styling looked great with the dramatic feel of the photos. While she had the sheet wrapped around her, she leaned against the piano, and I was able to snap some shots with the piano right behind her.

We also took photos using the mirror that I added to the piano set! This mirror is a thrifted purchase that was in my living room for SO many years, and ever since I bought it, I knew that I really wanted to photograph it. I ended up getting my wish with this boudoir session! We captured a few shots of my model through this mirror, and I love that you can see the details of the mirror in these photos.

I’m so thrilled that the piano set is all ready to be used for boudoir sessions. There are years of amazing memories that are packed into this set, and my hope is that you can also walk away with amazing memories after spending time in this space!
